Preop Hemoglobin Level For ELECTIVE Arthroplasty

On behalf of Dr. M Van der Vyver - Feb 25, 2025
Based on a recent meeting with Yulia Lin, we will use the following as our cut-off criteria for Hb before the patient can proceed to the OR for elective surgery. Infected joints (or surgery to rule out infection) are not elective surgery. The rationale for this: Low Hb levels postoperative lead to avoidable transfusion of RBC and a prolonged hospital stay.
• Primary hip and knee elective arthroplasty and Hb ≤ 105 g/L
• Revision hip and knee elective arthroplasty with anticipated estimated blood loss >500mL and Hb ≤ 110 g/L
Exceptions include patients who have previously been assessed by the hematology or blood conservation clinic
