Obstetric Anesthesia Consult Request Guidelines
The following guidelines and consult request procedure have been forwarded to our obstetrical colleagues
Please consider the need for a Pre-Anesthetic Consult prior to delivery:
Obstetrical – Invasive placenta, severe Pre-eclampsia
Anesthetic – personal or family history of complications ( Malignant hyperthermia, Pseudocholinesterase deficiency, previous difficult airway), previous tracheostomy
Morbid Obesity – pre-pregnancy BMI greater than 45
Respiratory Diseases – severe asthma, Obstructive Sleep Apnea +/- CPAP
Maternal Cardiovascular Diseases – Coronary Artery Disease, valvular disease, CHF, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HOCM)
Hematologic Diseases – hematologic disorders, patients on anticoagulation
Neurologic Diseases – Multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, significant spinal deformities (spina bifida, scoliosis, syrinx)
Chronic Pain – chronic opioid history, drug abuse history
Autoimmune Diseases – RA, lupus, etc
Renal Disease – dialysis, chronic renal failure
Cancer and Chemotherapy
Any patient with significant concerns with regards to their anesthetic

For urgent in-patient requests (required delivery/labour- in less 24 hrs ) call OB anesthesia phone 85167 directly.
For Outpatient request please book through High Risk Clinic on Wednesdays pm.
Please use the following instructions to input non-urgent OB anesthesia Consults online.
OB / Surgical Residents and fellows:
1. Access to the Anesthesia Inpatient Consult List page is available through a url shortcut, http://anesconsulteform or via the Sunnynet -> Physicians page
2. Surgical residents must populate all required fields, highlighted in red, including the surgical plan, consultation details and pager number. The surgical plan and consultation details fields are both free-text
