Pediatic Airway Management
Due to overwhelming triple threat of COVID-19, Flu and RSV this season, there exists a remote possibility of pediatric patients being diverted to Sunnybrook ER who may require respiratory / airway support or intubation in the worst case scenario.
As per Sunnybrook ER policy regarding critically ill children:
Age 0-28 days, call a Code Pink. NICU team comes to ED. They are skilled to intubate as needed. They will not necessarily take over care, but will come help.
Age 29 days to 2 years, call a Code Blue Child. This includes NICU team and anesthesia. They will not necessarily take over care, but will come help. (Technically you can call this Code up to 12 years, but likely has the most value up to 2 years)
Age 3 years and older: the ED team can call any consultant for help as needed, including anesthesia staff or surgical staff. Calling earlier is better. They will not necessarily take over care, but will come help.
Jason Maynes at HSC (Mobile 647 746 6198) for urgent consult PRN
standard technique at HSC for intubating young children with croup is now RSI but with the caveat that Rocuronium has a much shorter onset time due to pediatric kinetics
Broselow Pediatric cart in ER Blue zone 1 has more comprehensive airway equipment of various sizes. Ask for the cart to be brought to OR for airway intervention.
